Mental Wanderlust...

An eclectic mix of mainly Central Asian and former Soviet Union news, plus a few weirdities and random articles that have caught my eye while wandering through the internet. Occasionally personal, mostly topical, generally intelligible, infrequently ranty and sometimes even entertaining - for a certain target demographic, at least... This blog is currently mothballed and currently (March 2010) I do not have any intention to start it up again. This may however change in the future.

Wombat fatality and dining a la gay...

Tragic, but too good not to blog...

The BBC reports that 2 men in a car ended up in a tree after crashing into a wombat. The car then fell from the tree (about 6 metres) to the ground. The men were uninjured, the car a write-off and apparently the wombat was killed instantly. Full story here.

Then stumbled across this article on the Independent's website which asks the question 'Do two men having a quiet meal together make them look gay?' (God forbid...) Not something I generally ponder much - other than to assume they are at most of the places I eat - or at least hope they are - but quite a well-written article in places, if you can resist the temptation to fire off various insults at the author for being such an egotistical oaf (on a good day). More depressingly, how come this kind of thinking (good food and non-laddish behaviour = gay) only applies to men, are men really so sex-obsessed and when-oh-when are blokes going to realise that women don't need a man to have fun in bed (see comment about dinner with 2 bisexual females - why would they want him is a question that springs to mind...)? Incidentally, for an excruciatingly pubescent but mildly amusing take on the whole lesbians are sexy for straight men myth vs. reality, the Moscow-based expat rag the Exile has yet to be bettered - the link is here and prepare to be offended from the title onwards. You have been warned. I'll resist the temptation pursue this line to thought before I get accused of man-bashing. Anyhow, plus ca change plus ca meme chose when it comes to gender stereotypes it appears...

Finally, with no wish to gloat (but at the same time enjoying a slight air of schadenfraude) it appears the Archbishop of Canterbury got Fisked on Monday following his attack on 'lethal' media in a sermon. No, not a lewd continuation of the gay theme, but a kind of flagellation-by-blog following an unwise or ill-judged comment, with the etymology coming from the fact that Robert Fisk is apparently a really soft and easy target. The Observer Blog has comments on the matter as well.
