Mental Wanderlust...

An eclectic mix of mainly Central Asian and former Soviet Union news, plus a few weirdities and random articles that have caught my eye while wandering through the internet. Occasionally personal, mostly topical, generally intelligible, infrequently ranty and sometimes even entertaining - for a certain target demographic, at least... This blog is currently mothballed and currently (March 2010) I do not have any intention to start it up again. This may however change in the future.

WWJD? or WWJE?...

The right-swing continues with the What Would Jesus Eat diet...

The anatomy of sarcasm - but surely this cannot mean that all of America is affected?!

Eurovision 2005... well, what can I say... a lot of very mediocre songs, even more blatant politicking than usual (it that possible?!), the painful Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee double act of Ruslana and Vladimir Klitchko to fill in time, a pretty amazing body artist (not dancer - and with muscles and balance like that he can call himself whatever he likes...) and victory for Greece with a staggeringly-high 230 points... (The UK still got 18 points, which is more than it deserved.) Other 'highlights' included Serbia & Montenegro's boyband with symphony orchestra, Cyprus' 1990s industrial pop thing, Denmark's Jakob with a surprisingly catchy song (thought it would do better than it did), Spain's "The Ketchup Song 2" - a summer radio hit possibly?, Switzerland's Vanilla Ninja, who proved why they had that name (a little grr but still sweet innocent smiles) contrary to suggestions that it might be a little oxymoronic, and then Feminem's (Bosnia Herzogovina) outrageously unoriginal but fun Abba/S-Club 7 rip-off. Full details on the Eurovision website.

Looks like the Rotunda (the Z-Cars like round tower building in Brum city centre that somehow survived the rebuilding of the Bull Ring) has found new purpose, in true arty eccentric English fashion - hope I can find a photo of this one (photos on Verdonck's website - link below). Birmingham's newest (and biggest) swallow's nest is now only going to be on the second floor of the Rotunda, but Benjamin Verdonck's birdman "art" is just part of the Fierce festival in Brum. Odd, but why not...

Asparagus... Am rediscovering vegetables here in Copenhagen (there is only so much lettuce I can eat without feeling like a rabbit) so asparagus is back on the menu - the Observer has a timely article on it - best of all is simply lightly boiled with a dab of butter and salt. Also radishes with a little salt (Russian summers...), proper chilis and pickled cucumber salad. Very simple, very nice.
