No surprise there then...

There's a photo account of events in Andijan on the Muslin Uzbekistan website
For those who are not Russian-speakers, The Guardian has a background article on the regime in Uzbekistan "Where Torture and Terror Rule". The West is yet again suffering a bad dose of hypocrisy... Craig Murray (former UK ambassador to Uzbekistan, sacked for speaking out against torture and human rights abuses in the country/for abusing an embassy LandRover, cavorting and conduct unbecoming an ambassador, depending on which version you prefer) has a site that's worth looking at in this respect. Muslim Uzbekistan also has a fair amount of information in English - and a gruelling photo essay on victims of the regime. A lot of the photos are very graphic, showing evidence of beatings and/or more brutal torture; not easy viewing, but maybe this is the only way to shock people out of their complacency and decide that people in a little country that most of us haven't ever heard of, let alone thought about, do actually matter... Novel concept.
Interesting sites on Uzbekistan and the 'Stans' more generally are Ferghana.ru, Registan.net, AkiPress and contrastingly. Worth looking a couple at least to get an idea of different opinions...
