Mental Wanderlust...

An eclectic mix of mainly Central Asian and former Soviet Union news, plus a few weirdities and random articles that have caught my eye while wandering through the internet. Occasionally personal, mostly topical, generally intelligible, infrequently ranty and sometimes even entertaining - for a certain target demographic, at least... This blog is currently mothballed and currently (March 2010) I do not have any intention to start it up again. This may however change in the future.

Finally, my translation of the Bermet Akaeva interview I posted about a while back is available, kindly published on the Gazeta.kg site thanks to Ulan Melisbek.

Interview with Bermet Akaeva
Posted By CXW On 26th July 2005 @ 08:38

Gazeta.kg published an interview with ex-Kyrgyz President Askar Akaev's daughter, Bermet Akaeva, on July 14. Following some speedy translation work, there is now an English translation of the interview available as well.

Well-known local journalist Leila Saralaeva interviewed Bermet and posed a number of less-than-comfortable questions, motivated, as she explained, primarily by curiousity:

Curiosity moved me to interview Bermet: how does she perceive everything that has happened, when in the space of one hour she lost her high position and her status as a deputy and the daughter of the country's president.

Unsurprisingly, the interview provoked a wide range of reactions from readers, who commented extensively on it (view all comments here).
