Mental Wanderlust...

An eclectic mix of mainly Central Asian and former Soviet Union news, plus a few weirdities and random articles that have caught my eye while wandering through the internet. Occasionally personal, mostly topical, generally intelligible, infrequently ranty and sometimes even entertaining - for a certain target demographic, at least... This blog is currently mothballed and currently (March 2010) I do not have any intention to start it up again. This may however change in the future.

Back in the USSR...

The FT has an article on different views of the Soviet Union in Russia today by Anna Blundy noting current cynicism in the country.

These days, instead of toasts at the end of an evening, someone, sighing deeply, will quote ex-prime minister Viktor Chernomyrdin: "My khoteli kak luchshe, no poluchilos kak vsegda" - "We wanted to make things better, but it turned out like it always does." Everyone laughs, shakes their head and talks about the "god-forgotten country" they live in. And we wonder whether it's just that we're all older or if Russia really did not use to be like this.
